Design and Display

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G is quite reminiscent of Samsung’s now defunct Galaxy Note Series. If you are looking for a replacement for your Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra, this might be it. The integrated S-Pen is a pointer to this. It features an aluminium frame with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus Plus protection on the front and back. You can buy the smartphone in seven different colour options: Phantom Black, White, Burgundy, Green, Graphite, Red, Sky Blue.

While the design material is the same, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G does not look anything like its predecessor  . The top and bottom corners are flat unlike the curved corners of it's  predecessors like the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and Galaxy S21 FE. The sides also appears to be more curved.

We also noticed another design shift on the back with the bump that housed the rear cameras now gone. The camera positions are still the same just that they are no longer sitting raised.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra  is IP68 certified with dust and water resistance capability. It can survive up to 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G features a brilliant 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with 1440 x 3088 pixels (500 ppi), HDR10+, and Always on display. However, the default resolution is 1080 x 2316 pixels to save battery, but it is adjustable at any time. While the OLED ensures deeper blacks and vivid colours, the 1750 nits brightness ensures a comfortable view even in direct sunlight.

The display features impressive adaptive refresh rate, which goes a long way in saving battery life. This display can adapt refresh rate between 1Hz to up to 120 Hz, using just about the right refresh rate required for the best result. This helps in battery management.

Camera and photography

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G camera and display

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G features just about the same camera as its predecessor. You  get two 10 megapixels telephoto cameras offering 10x and 3x optical zoom respectively. It also retains a 12 megapixels ultrawide angle and 108 megapixels wide-angle main camera. Samsung has improved the technology for better photography with improvements in Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) and the up to 100x space zoom.

The camera can record 8k videos at up to 24 fps, 4k videos at up to 60 fps, Full HD videos at up to 240 fps, and HD videos at up to 960 fps. You also get phase detection autofocus (PDAF) and Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS).

The front camera is a 40 megapixels camera with supports for dual video calls and record 4k videos at up to 60 frames per second (fps).

Hardware and Software

The Galaxy S22 Ultra offers the option of two top of the line processors, both based on the 4 nm technology. You get either Qualcomm’s top of the line chipset for android devices or Samsung’s in-house Exynos processor.

While consumers in the United States and a few other countries get Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the rest of the world get Samsung’s Exynos 2200 chipset. Both chipsets offer similar performance.

While the Qualcomm SM8450 Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 offers a single-core Cortex-X2 clocked at 3GHz, a triple-core Cortex-A710 clocked at 2.4GHz, and a quad-core Cortex-A510 clocked at up to 1.7GHz, the Samsung Exynos 2200 offers an octa-core processor with a single-core Cortex-X2 clocked at 2.8GHz, a triple-core Cortex-A710 clocked at 2.5GHz, and a quad-core Cortex-A510 clocked at 1.8GHz.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G offers a model with 8GB RAM and 128GB built-in storage and a model with 12GB RAM with the option of 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB built-in storage. The solid hardware makes it one of the best gaming phones. There is no memory card slot provided

Battery and Connectivity

Thia smartphone features the same battery capacity as its predecessor. You get the same 5000 mAh battery. Battery performance should be similar, though the adaptive refresh rate and more efficient processors may make this model a bit better in the battery department.

The smartphone supports up to 45W charging capacity, USB Power Delivery 3.0, 15W wireless charging, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G is loaded with Android 12 out of the box. It runs on Samsung’s latest interface, the One UI 4.1.
